With the start of each new riding season, comes the review and renewal of the motorcycle insurance policy. I'm always amazed at what is and what isn't covered. Got chrome? You best write it off as a loss, because most policies won't cover damage to chrome. Then there is the coverage for bodily injury, where our body parts are listed by monetary value. I'm well aware, of course that motorcycles are replaceable, and a life is not. With this in mind I take out extra insurance in the form of the Blessing of the Bikers.

Early in each riding season there are several opportunities to receive this blessing. In New Hampshire, there are two popular places to have this done. One is in Colebrook, and the other is right here in Rindge at the Cathedral of the Pines. Typically, at a blessing, there is a prayer and sprinkling of holy water upon the rider and motorcycle. Either, the padre comes to you, or you ride to the padre. In Colebrook, the shear number of motorcyclists makes it impossible for the padre to come to you. The result is a long procession at which each bike stops for the holy water blessing after the loud speaker prayer.

As is typical of any event, there are usually a number of vendors hawking their wares. It can seem less than solemn. However, the event at the Cathedral of the Pines remains for me the most pious of events. A much smaller affair than any of the others, being blessed and prayed over remains the true focus. Each biker pulls forward for an intimate and solemn prayer, with a token in the form of a Christian symbol given to each rider. When you attend a blessing at the Cathedral, you come away feeling like it "took."

The solemnity of the event is further enhanced by the surroundings at the Cathedral of the Pines. Those who attend seem to instinctively understand this as they ride respectfully along the drive. The engines quietly rumble. No throttle twisting here. With kickstands down, we gather as a group for an inspirational sermon. We are surrounded by the beauty our Maker has provided for us. The tall pines creek as they sway in the gentle breeze. The smell of the rich earth fills our nostrils. The views from a clearing give us a sense of majesty.

I look down at my token, which is a lapel stick pin in the shape of a cross. I select a location for my pin. I want to see it each time I mount, so I select the ribbon on the tool bag just in front of me. I have a time piece here as well. The time piece is not really for getting home on time, but to remind me that time waits for no one, to seize the moment, and that life is short. The cross will remind me of my many blessings, this beautiful day and for many more with which I hope to be blessed. If the blessing I received did indeed "take" then I will come back again next year for my renewal.

Pat Henderson lives in Wilton, New Hampshire with her husband Andy. Their favorite pastime is motorcycling around New England. A good deal of what Pat writes about is motorcycle inspired. Her short essay entitled Observation from the Saddle was published in Biker Ally, a motorcycle magazine for women. She often ponders life while on the road with Jade, her Yamaha vStar.
