I want to get a motorcycle but can't decide between new & old?
I just got my endorsement. now I want one but I'm not sure which kind. I like the newer honda shadows (liquid cooled, very reliable) and other cruisers (star, kawasaki, yamaha). But I want to know about royal enfields and urals? Urals are a bit out of my price range, but Royal Enfields might not be? What about used? I would like them to be fuel injected since half the reason I'm getting them is fuel economy and the other half cool and useful for long trips along the oregon coast.
I agree: stay away from the Royal Enfields. They look nice but they're not reliable for long distance rides. Same goes for the Urals. Pricey too. Instead, buy yourself a used Japanese standard or cruiser. Parts are easy to come by and they're reasonably priced. Being a new rider I would suggest you buy a good used bike instead of a new one. Every new rider either drops the bike or has a run-in with something that just won't get out of the way. It's part of the learning process and you can't avoid it. You'll be disappointed if you scratch up a $4000 used bike but you'll really be screaming if you damage a new $10,000 bike. That screaming will get louder when you compare the repair costs if you buy the new one. Get a used bike now, then sell it and get a new one in a couple of years. Besides, who knows: you may not even like riding as much as you think you will. If that happens and you decide to sell the bike you'll lose much less on a used bike than a new one. You might even make a few bucks on the used bike. It happens.
Fuel injection is nice but don't pass up a good bike just because it doesn't have it. There are a lot of bikes that get good gas mileage (60 MPG or better) that aren't fuel injected. Carburetors are also easier for the new rider-turned-mechanic to learn to work on. Troubleshooting fuel injected systems can be a real nightmare without the right tools and experience.
If you're looking to make long trips though, sit on a lot of different bikes and pay particular attention to the seats. Nothing, absolutely nothing is more important on a long trip than a good seat, one that's comfortable for you. My first new bike (a Suzuki GR650) had a seat that looked like the seats on every other bike but it was so uncomfortable that I had to get off every 50 miles just to let the numbing sensation in my butt and upper legs subside. Put the bike on the center stand, climb aboard and pay attention to the configuration of the foot pegs and the way you sit with both feet in place. Sit there for a while and listen to what your butt and back say. No matter what style of bike you like if it's not the most comfortable bike you can afford you'll regret buying it when you take that first long trip.
Your bike has to fit you just like your boots, your jacket and your helmet so don't buy it because it fits someone else. If you wear a size 8 boot you wouldn't buy my size 12's just because I said they were the most comfortable boots ever made. Bikes come in different sizes, too. Never mind that a friend of yours has a bike that he just raves about. It may be incredibly comfortable for him but is he exactly the same size as you, height and weight-wise? Are his legs exactly the same length as yours? If not, you may not like that bike at all on a long trip. You might well curse that uncomfortable bike when you're 300 miles from home and realize you have to ride it back. Sit on a LOT of bikes and choose the one that's the most comfortable for you.
If a helmet or boots don't fit you before you buy they won't fit you after you buy. Either will the bike.
