Which is better? Vanagon or Eurovan
Usually VW Bus, Vanagon Westfalia and VW Eurovan Winnebago campers are known as van conversions. Vanagon Camper was converted to a camper in Germany by Westfalia Company. Some important features of Vanagons are rear engine, rear wheel drive vehicles with lot of ground clearance. Eurovan Winnebago camper was converted to Eurovan in USA by the Winnebago Company. It is 15-1/2 inches longer than the regular CL, MV and GLS Eurovan models. In USA, Euro Winnebago Camper was offered during 1995, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003. Eurovan is a front engine, front wheel drive vehicle with much less ground clearance. It is a completely different animal. Eurovan is considered superior than vanagon in all aspects, expect for some:
Vanagons have a 96 inch wheelbase while Eurovan campers have 136 inch. Although this makes for a more comfortable highway ride, they have a very huge turning radius. This makes the much less maneuverable, especially in tight off-road types of conditions and for everyday parallel parking.
Quality provided by Westfalia in Germany is simply superior to the quality offered by Winnebago in USA. Westfalia fit, finish, materials-it’s all better, and made to last.
Vanagons are cool, interesting and unique. Many people don’t prefer Vanagons because it has rear engine, rear wheel drive, sit-over-the-front-wheels etc.
If you see Eurovan Winnebago camper is superior in all respects. It is newer, safer, quieter, more powerful, less problematic mechanically, has better ventilation, A/C, is fully equipped with power and Cruise Control and has a much better camper section, built-in-furnace, gray water tank, more cabinet space, fresh water at sink and LPG capacity.
Do you prefer Vanagon or Eurovan? If you had VW Bus in the past, you would feel 86-91 Vanagon is heaven. Eurovan is completely different from VW Bus. People who have VW bus will hate it.
If you live to travel on highways then Eurovan is meant for you. If you don’t know which one to buy just test drive both Eurovan Winnebago camper and Eurovan Westfalia Weekender and find out yourself which one is best for you.
Other models include VW Vanagons and Eurovans. The interior layouts in the various pop-top versions of the Vanagon, stayed same throughout the years. Earlier cabinets of Vanagon pop-tops were fake wood-grain, the seats were a funky striped design, and all the wall and ceiling covering was a thin contact paper-like material that would fall off.
During 1984 Wolfsburg Edition campers and all 85 and newer campers, the cabinet finish changed to a soft tan color, the fabric changed to a more subdued and extremely durable tan velour fabric, and the funky contact paper was replaced with a durable material. All 87’-’91 full camper interiors are grey and are almost identical.
