Combinatorial Auctions

Combinatorial Auctions

$55.99

"With a foreword by Vernon L. Smith, recipient of the 2002 Nobel Prize in Economics." The study of combinatorial auctions--auctions in which bidders can bid on combinations of items or "packages"--draws on the disciplines of economics, operations research, and computer science. This landmark collection integrates these three perspectives, offering a state-of-the art survey of developments in combinatorial auction theory and practice by leaders in the field. Combinatorial auctions (CAs), by allowing bidders to express their preferences more fully, can lead to improved economic efficiency and greater auction revenues. However, challenges arise in both design and implementation. "Combinatorial Auctions" addresses each of these challenges. After describing and analyzing various CA mechanisms, the book addresses bidding languages and questions of efficiency. Possible strategies for solving the computationally intractable problem of how to compute the objective-maximizing allocation (known as the winner determination problem) are considered, as are questions of how to test alternative algorithms. The book discusses five important applications of CAs: spectrum auctions, airport takeoff and landing slots, procurement of freight transportation services, the London bus routes market, and industrial procurement. This unique collection makes recent work in CAs available to a broad audience of researchers and practitioners. The integration of work from the three disciplines underlying CAs, using a common language throughout, serves to advance the field in theory and practice.

Deal Engines: The Science of Auctions, Stock Markets, and E-Markets

Deal Engines: The Science of Auctions, Stock Markets, and E-Markets

$3.98

In Deal Engines, leading economist Robert E. Hall explains the underlying principles of auctions and provides sweeping insight for anyone curious to understand and exploit them. Drawing on decades of research that includes Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, Hall explains that how you set up a market has a lot to do with the deals that result. Moving from examples as straightforward as shopping for a car to others as complex as the mechanisms of stock exchanges, he describes the various types of deal engines that can be used to conduct transactions, including auctions, real-time exchanges, and posted-price sales engines. Hall analyzes the qualities of the markets these deal engines give rise to, with an eye to practical outcomes, and provides invaluable information and guidance to everyone from entrepreneurs working on a business plan to buyers on eBay. Originally published in hardcover under the title Digital Dealing.

Auctions: Theory and Practice

Auctions: Theory and Practice

$47.01

Governments use them to sell everything from oilfields to pollution permits, and to privatize companies; consumers rely on them to buy baseball tickets and hotel rooms, and economic theorists employ them to explain booms and busts. Auctions make up many of the world's most important markets; and this book describes how auction theory has also become an invaluable tool for understanding economics. "Auctions: Theory and Practice" provides a non-technical introduction to auction theory, and emphasises its practical application. Although there are many extremely successful auction markets, there have also been some notable fiascos, and Klemperer provides many examples. He discusses the successes and failures of the one-hundred-billion dollar "third-generation" mobile-phone license auctions; he, jointly with Ken Binmore, designed the first of these. Klemperer also demonstrates the surprising power of auction theory to explain seemingly unconnected issues such as the intensity of different forms of industrial competition, the costs of litigation, and even stock trading 'frenzies' and financial crashes. Engagingly written, the book makes the subject exciting not only to economics students but to anyone interested in auctions and their role in economics.

Price Variations in Online Auctions

Price Variations in Online Auctions

$91.99

In a thick market with a large number of homogeneous goods, it is often assumed that prices tend to converge. This assumption, however, does not hold in the context of online auctions. The goal of this work is to investigate how different factors may contribute to the auction price variation in a thick market. My approach is to systematically examine both the supply and demand side. On the supply side, both seller expertise and selling strategy influence the auction price, while seller expertise also affects how sellers develop their selling strategy. Likewise, on the demand side, both bidder expertise and bidding strategy influence the auction price, while bidder expertise also affects how bidders set their bidding strategy. The effect of these factors on price tends to vary across different levels of quality uncertainty. Drawing on auction theory, signaling theory and past empirical work, this study develops a framework to guide current as well as future research in the area of online auctions.

Modeling Online Auctions

Modeling Online Auctions

$110

Explore cutting-edge statistical methodologies for collecting, analyzing, and modeling online auction data Online auctions are an increasingly important marketplace, as the new mechanisms and formats underlying these auctions have enabled the capturing and recording of large amounts of bidding data that are used to make important business decisions. As a result, new statistical ideas and innovation are needed to understand bidders, sellers, and prices. Combining methodologies from the fields of statistics, data mining, information systems, and economics, Modeling Online Auctions introduces a new approach to identifying obstacles and asking new questions using online auction data. The authors draw upon their extensive experience to introduce the latest methods for extracting new knowledge from online auction data. Rather than approach the topic from the traditional game-theoretic perspective, the book treats the online auction mechanism as a data generator, outlining methods to collect, explore, model, and forecast data. Topics covered include: Data collection methods for online auctions and related issues that arise in drawing data samples from a Web site Models for bidder and bid arrivals, treating the different approaches for exploring bidder-seller networks Data exploration, such as integration of time series and cross-sectional information; curve clustering; semi-continuous data structures; and data hierarchies The use of functional regression as well as functional differential equation models, spatial models, and stochastic models for capturing relationships in auction data Specialized methods and models for forecasting auction prices and their applications in automated bidding decision rule systems Throughout the book, R and MATLAB software are used for illustrating the discussed techniques. In addition, a related Web site features many of the book's datasets and R and MATLAB code that allow readers to replicate the analyses and learn new methods to apply to their own research. Modeling Online Auctions is a valuable book for graduate-level courses on data mining and applied regression analysis. It is also a one-of-a-kind reference for researchers in the fields of statistics, information systems, business, and marketing who work with electronic data and are looking for new approaches for understanding online auctions and processes. Scholary Paper aus dem Jahr 2002 im Fachbereich Wirtschaft - Marketing, Unternehmenskommunikation, CRM, Marktforschung, einseitig bedruckt, Note: 1,3 (A), European Business School - Internationale Universitat Schloss Reichartshausen Oestrich-Winkel (Marketing Cluster), Veranstaltung: Seminar: E-Commerce Marketing, 29 Eintragungen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Englisch, Abstract: B2B online, reverse auctions are said to revolutionize the traditional way suppliers and buyers do business. In 2001, General Electric expected to generate up to $600 million in savings by organizing their procurement through the means of online, reverse auctions. In 2000 Forrester Research estimated that B2B online, reverse auctions would reach $52 billion in revenue by the end of 2002. A benchmark study by CAPS Research stated that 1,5% of today's purchases are made through electronic auctions.Even studies considered "conservative" believe that 10% of all procurement budgets, which total $4,1 trillion in the U.S., could be spent through reverse auctions. That would mean over $400 billion spent through reverse auctions would create savings of up $50 billion, taking into account a conservative savings rate of 12%. These savings make up 0,5% of the US-GIP. These are impressive numbers for a simple procurement tool, and they have persisted through the end of the online hype and the decline of the new markets in 2001 and 2002. Do these numbers represent true savings, finally holding the promise of B2B e-commerce? Or do they just delude other consequences?Because the practice of online, reverse auctions came into being only recently, it is too early to ascertain long term consequences. Thus, this paper will draw a first overview of the short-term positive and negative consequences on behalf of the buyer and the supplier

Common Value Auctions and the Winner's Curse

Common Value Auctions and the Winner's Curse

$99.95

Few forms of market exchange intrigue economists as do auctions, whose theoretical and practical implications are enormous. John Kagel and Dan Levin, complementing their own distinguished research with papers written with other specialists, provide a new focus on common value auctions and the "winner's curse." In such auctions the value of each item is about the same to all bidders, but different bidders have different information about the underlying value. Virtually all auctions have a common value element; among the burgeoning modern-day examples are those organized by Internet companies such as eBay. Winners end up cursing when they realize that they won because their estimates were overly optimistic, which led them to bid too much and lose money as a result. The authors first unveil a fresh survey of experimental data on the winner's curse. Melding theory with the econometric analysis of field data, they assess the design of government auctions, such as the spectrum rights (air wave) auctions that continue to be conducted around the world. The remaining chapters gauge the impact on sellers' revenue of the type of auction used and of inside information, show how bidders learn to avoid the winner's curse, and present comparisons of sophisticated bidders with college sophomores, the usual guinea pigs used in laboratory experiments. Appendixes refine theoretical arguments and, in some cases, present entirely new data. This book is an invaluable, impeccably up-to-date resource on how auctions work--and how to make them work.

Experimental Auctions: Methods and Applications in Economic and Marketing Research

Experimental Auctions: Methods and Applications in Economic and Marketing Research

$10.98

Economists, psychologists, and marketers are interested in determining the monetary value people place on non-market goods for a variety of reasons: to carry out cost-benefit analysis, to determine the welfare effects of technological innovation or public policy, to forecast new product success, and to understand individual and consumer behavior. Unfortunately, many currently available techniques for eliciting individuals' values suffer from a serious problem in that they involve asking individuals hypothetical questions about intended behavior. Experimental auctions circumvent this problem because they involve individuals exchanging real money for real goods in an active market. This represents a promising means for eliciting non-market values. Lusk and Shogren provide a comprehensive guide to the theory and practice of experimental auctions. It will be a valuable resource to graduate students, practitioners and researchers concerned with the design and utilization of experimental auctions in applied economic and marketing research.

Making Money with Storage Auctions

Making Money with Storage Auctions

$21.3

It is a little known fact that all across America each month, thousands of storage units are auctioned off because the tenants have failed to pay the rent. The vast majority of these units will be sold well below what they are worth. This creates an opportunity for the ambitious, risk taking investor. It is possible to buy these units and profit from the sale of the items they contain. I, personally, have seen profits in one day that put a years worth of stock market gains to shame. You might ask yourself why you have not heard about these opportunities before. Well, the answer is that auction buyers know how much money they can make and are careful not to reveal their secrets. Inside this book, I break this code of silence. Learn how you can take part in this great opportunity

Bidding Strategies in Agent-Based Continuous Double Auctions

Bidding Strategies in Agent-Based Continuous Double Auctions

$63.43

Online auctions are a platform to trade goods on the Internet. In this context, negotiation capabilities for software agents in continuous double auctions (CDAs) are a central concern. Agents need to be able to prepare bids for and evaluate offers on behalf of the users they represent with the aim of obtaining the maximum benefit for their users. For the agents, their bids are decided according to some bidding strategy. However, in CDAs, it is a complex decision problem because of the inherent uncertainty and dynamics of the auction market. In this book, we present a new bidding strategy for agents to adopt in CDAs and propose tools to enhance the performance of existing bidding strategies in CDAs. The superior performance of the new bidding strategy as well as the tools presented in this book are illustrated through extensive experiments.

Pricing and Bidding Strategies in Iterative Combinatorial Auctions

Pricing and Bidding Strategies in Iterative Combinatorial Auctions

$116.12

Iterative combinatorial auctions (ICAs) are IT-based economic mechanisms in which bidders submit bundle bids iteratively and the auctioneer computes allocations and ask prices in each auction round. In addition to strategic problems, the design of such auction formats exhibits hard computational problems. More recently, researchers have focused on the pricing and information feedback in ICAs. This book presents the results of 5 years research in this field, whereas the emphasis was put on the practical applicability of considered auction designs and pricing mechanisms in these auctions. The main topic of this book is a comprehensive comparison of the most important auction designs proposed in the literature by means of computational and laboratory experiments. Additionally, the book presents a new auction design ALPS, which has been shown very efficient and robust in many settings. In laboratory experiments all considered auction designs were tested for practical applicability and robustness against diverse bidding strategies.

Internet Marketplaces: The Law of Auctions and Exchanges Online

Internet Marketplaces: The Law of Auctions and Exchanges Online

$151.11

Internet Marketplaces explains and analyses the legal questions and challenges posed by the increased use of online auctions and exchanges for business transactions. Rather than focusing on internet businesses as a whole, the author studies the rules related to closed internet marketplaces where commercial dealings are carried out. The book provides a detailed analysis of the new business models that are being employed, their legal structures, and the extent to which further work is still required to fill in the legal infrastructure. Professor Ramberg is well known for her expertise and involvement in this field, and the book will prove to be useful to fellow practitioners as well as being a key reference for academics working in this area.
