This is a review of the Hal Leonard Publication Stadium Arcadium Recorded Versions. Stadium Arcadium is of course the name of an album by The Red Hot Chili Peppers - and their bass player is Flea.
Now given the popularity of both The Red Hot Chili Peppers as a band, and Flea as a bass player, there are lots of transcription books available for those players on their journey of how to play bass. So what makes this one any different?
Well there are several elements that make this an outstanding package.
The first element is the two CDs that come with the package. These CDs contain remixed versions of the the songs on the Double CD release Stadium Arcadium. And the remixed songs contain just bass and guitar. All the vocals and drums have been taken off, so it's much easier to hear exactly what Flea is doing on all these tracks. This special CD has been mastered really professionally and is a treat to listen to.
The second element that makes this an outstanding package is the transcriptions themselves. Hal Leonard produce really high quality printed music and this book is no different. Flea's bass lines are presented in both standard music notation and bass tab. Plus you get the chord symbols and the melodies to the songs too. So if you want to go into the songs and analyse them in great detail you have the majority of the details you need to do this.
The third element that makes this an outstanding package - there's no fluff. The publishers have recognized that those players who are likely to buy this book are probably Flea fans and are there for the bass lines, and don't need potted biographical details, or discographies, or any extraneous detail.
Could the book be better? Well, books can always be better. Spiral binding the book would have made the book better for a start.
Detailed track by track analysis in conjunction with Flea would have also elevated this from outstanding right into the realms of the great. It would have been nice to have Flea shed some light on the creative process of creating these bass lines.
The mix of the CD could also have been more interesting - stereo separation of the guitar and bass would have made those parts individually clearer. And some of the nuances of Flea's playing would have been even more discernible.
But if you're into rock bass this is a book/CD package that really should be in your library.
