Superbikes Come to India
Market of superbikes is quietly increasing in India, with fans seeking that tantalizing rush of adrenaline, undeterred by the high rates of these machines. The Japanese bike, Yamaha alone has sold about 130 superbikes, MT01 and YZFR, since its launch in November 2007. Suzuki with great prices like Intruder and Hayabusa has sold more than 100 of them since 2007, while Ducat and Honda are other in the Indian market. While models on regular basis have engine power ranging from 110 cc to 360 cc, the superbikes on the Indian roads begin from 1000CC to 1300-cc. Incidentally the 3600cc Royal Enfield has been considered as the answer to the Harley Davidson that has good repute all over the world. Superbikes in India also have a cult status in country since most of them are imported. Manufacturers of India are yet to enter this elite segment as they put more focus on providing what is most demanding than supplying to a niche segment. As a result, major auto companies like Hero Honda and Bajaj have not gone above 240 cc. The placement of superbikes in India is for a limited section as they range from Rs. 125,000 to 5 million. Some custom made machines can even go higher.
For those people who are unable to get one, modifying existing bikes is an answer. Karizma, a modified model of Hero Honda and is suitable for Sunday group rides. Modifying existing bike cost around Rs 10,000. It usually depends if you want to tinker with engine or not. Otherwise, with normal modification, the cost can be as low as Rs 5000. Indian auto industry estimates, about 200 superbikes were sold in 2008, the first year since the start of big machines by Ducati, Yamaha and Suzuki. Reports suggest, a total sale of Yamaha logged 110 units, Ducati sold more than 50 units and rest went into account of Suzuki. In the end of 2007, Indian government did not permit import of superbikes more than 800cc. So, superbikes stayed as the exclusive preserve of celebrities. India is controlled by fuel efficient and low cost bikes. But there is still a good market for high performance vehicles. Almost every major company has started their superbikes in India. Suzuki has already sold about 100 units of their superbikes that are priced over Rs-10 lakhs in Indian market. Suzuki is now trying to sell another 150 units of Intruder and Hayabusa by the end of this year.
Both Intruder and Hayabusa are considered as ultimate machines and are popular for their strong engine and style. Launch of both bikes in every country was electrifying and thrilling. These bikes are said to be worth a wait in Indian market, as the bikes style, epitomize power and technology as one and that is Suzuki. The launch attracted many customers in hoards. The superbikes have been placed in 7 big cities - Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Delhi.
