What's the difference between a naked bike, Sport Bike, and cruiser while riding on the highway?
I just got my first bike, it's a GS500e naked bike (no fairings or windshield). When I go 70+ mph the wind becomes annoying. Will riding a Sport Bike with a small windshield or one of the bigger touring bikes make it more comfortable to ride on the highway?
You have discovered one of the hard truths about riding a naked bike: it can be quite comfortable at 55-65 mph, but get up over 70 and the wind begins to beat you up. One thing you can do is fit lower, narrower bars, which let you lean forward more. Without a screen, the wind supports your upper body, and your bike is more comfortable at higher speeds, at the cost of some loss of comfort at lower speeds.
A windshield attached to the handlebars can do a lot to increase your comfort. There is usually a penalty to pay in fuel consumption and high-speed road manners. Behind a windshield, you will probably be more comfortable with an upright riding position or a slight forward lean. The stock bars will probably work for you here, or you may want to move them up and back, either by selecting a different bend, or by relocating them.
In addition, there are bar-mounted fairings, generally referred to as 1/4 fairings, that can clean up the air flow around your torso, and offer a degree of protection from the elements. The Parabellum Scout is a larger example of such a fairing; it gives pretty good coverage, cleans up the airflow a bit, and is pretty well-behaved at higher speeds.
Sport bike fairings will vary considerably as to their coverage, and may require an extreme crouch to realize any benefit. Sport-tourers like the Honda VFRs and the Yamaha FJR1300 give excellent weather protection and a comfortable riding position along with good high-speed road manners.
Back to your GS, you can get an additional measure of wind protection with a tank bag and a set of tank panniers like those sold by Aerostich. I have put an awful lot of miles on modestly-powered twins set up this way, often traveling hundreds of miles at 75-90 mph behind a small fairing and some strategically-placed luggage.
