Each school day I drive my son Tyler to school and drop him off at the designated area. The round trip is less than 5 miles and only takes about 15 minutes. But in that short time span, it is truly amazing how many people almost go out of their way to not show any common courtesy. What happened?
I remember growing up and experiencing the same ride to school that I now offer to my son. There were five of us kids and we lived with mom and dad in what seemed to be a nice size house. Actually it was not much bigger than a two-bedroom apartment and it only had one bathroom. You can imagine, my mom making breakfast and preparing the sack lunch of the day, all of my sisters and big brother flying around the house, waiting for their turn to use the bathroom. It was purely unofficial, but there was a pecking order when it came to the use of the bathroom. Everyone knew it, they didn't necessarily like it, but they knew it.
Out the door we would go, each person sliding into his or her spot in the car. Doors slamming, seatbelts buckling; yes, even back before they were standard equipment my dad had installed seatbelts. It was mandatory that each be secured or the car did not move. With mom as our chauffeur, off to school we would go. Each morning was just a little different. Someone had to be somewhere special, but ultimately we would end up in front of my school.
The drop off system at my school was very similar to what they have at Tyler's school. Go figure! I guess they couldn't improve on that mousetrap. Mom always seemed to be the first car in line when it came my turn. "Come on mom! Don't pull all the way down, I have to walk further". "Fine!" she said. Leaving the line and wheeling into the parking lot some 50 yards further away, she finished by saying "Maybe this will teach you to be a little more courteous to the people behind us". "Got it mom!" "Keep your big mouth shut dummy" came grumbling out of my mouth. "What did you say?" "Nothing mom, love you!" Walking that extra 50 yards really burned me. But, I never forgot that little lesson.
I'm pulling up to drop off Tyler. The rules are very simple. If you're the first car you don't drop your kid off until you reach the last pylon. Each car thereafter pulls up to the car in front of them until the area is full all the way back to the first pylon. This allows the maximum amount of kids to be dropped off safely and it gets all the moms and dads out quickly with the minimum of waiting in line time.
This morning was going to be extra special. Why? Well, the only car in front of me was the silver streak that had just raced up behind me, flew around and then slammed on the brakes as we approached the school zone. "Nice! You picked up one spot, good for you" I said. We turned into the school parking lot and headed to the drop off area. The silver streak barely gets past the first pylon and stops right in front of the main door. The last pylon was so far away you could have parked a bus, two SUV's and a Yugo in that space. That space was twice the size of Rhode Island for Pete's sake. Oh Yeah! Did I mention that the silver streak went straight at the "right turn only" sign as we left the school parking lot? Ok good, I didn't want to leave that out. As the silver streak pulled away I became aware of the fish symbol that was proudly displayed on the trunk of the car.
How can we expect to witness to the world if we can't even display just a little common courtesy? We are better than that, aren't we? Follow the simple rules of common courtesy. You know what they are, open a door for someone, return the grocery basket to the holding area in the parking lot, say a kind word with a smile as you enter the elevator; then maybe, just maybe the world will begin to notice that there truly is something special about us. ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS, as they say.
