Wellness not Illness in the Indian Workplace!

They say Mumbai is the city that never sleeps. It may be a city of insomniacs after all! And for every insomniac there has to be an angel that puts them to sleep. This city needs many more health and wellness experts that itThey say Mumbai is the city that never sleeps. It may be a city of insomniacs after all! And for every insomniac there has to be an angel that puts them to sleep. This city needs many more health and wellness experts that it currently does and as such the city is woefully inequipped to handle the demands of the millions of broken down spirits and bodies that dot the urban landscape.

For an average Mumbai male - bogged down as he is by the pressures of daily travel that includes traveling in cramped, claustrophobic train buses and train compartments, standing for long hours on one's feet, twisting and turning one's body even as one walks (trying to dodge people, autorickshaw's, bikes and stray animals on the cities roads), the physical strain of just reaching one's workplace is enormous.

And then settling down to a long day at work. Most Indian Businesses are run in a highly capitalistic way whereby the owners do not care about the wellness of their employee. An employee is simply a head - on top of a body that is dispensable! An employee is a slave meant to juice out and provide returns on the CTC that the company is paying him. Wellness in the corporate workplace amongst most companies is an alien concept. But the employers are not really to blame. The attitude of the employers in fact mirrors the attitude of large swathes of Indians for whom - Illness comes and then Treatment follows. Cars are only taken to the garage when it breaks down. Cooking Gas Stoves are serviced only when gas starts leaking off a gas cylinder. Houses are repaired only when the roof caves in!

So the poor Indian employee works and works until his bosses are pleased with the long hours that he puts in hunched over an ill-designed chair staring at an old computer screen and often forgoing lunch for a greasy pakoda and oodles of sugary sweet chai.

It is apparent to see that this life-is-cheap attitude is prevalent in the mindsets of most Indians and warrants an instant re-look before disaster happens. The Indian mindset towards health is symptomatic of the 'rupee wise, pound insanely foolish' approach. Millions of Corporate Rupees go down the drain in terms of absenteism and health breakdowns when the body unable to cope with the daily tear and wear finally caves in.

'Wellness not Illness'should be the new mantra of every urban Indian. Time must be made out for gymming it out, running, swimming and indulging in other health activities and sports. One of the best and most rewarding wellness that a corporate India can definitely indulge in to balance the physical activities is a weekly massage - preferably over the weekend.

Purpose of a Swedish Massage

The main purpose of Swedish massage is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. Swedish massage also shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes.

It increases circulation without increasing heart load. It stretches the ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and flexible. Swedish massage also stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves themselves at the same time. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is suggested in a regular program for stress management. It also has many specific medical uses.

Swedish Massage Techniques

Swedish massage techniques include: long strokes, kneading, friction, tapping, percussion, vibration, effleurage, and shaking motions. The usually sequence of techniques are:

  • Effleurage: Gliding strokes with the palms, thumbs and/or fingertips
  • Petrissage: Kneading movements with the hands, thumbs and/or fingers
  • Friction: Circular pressures with the palms of hands, thumbs and/or fingers
  • Vibration: Oscillatory movements that shake or vibrate the body
  • Percussion: Brisk hacking or tapping
  • Passive and active movements: Bending and stretching
  • A Swedish massage feels good, is relaxing and invigorating. It affects the nerves, muscles, glands, and circulation, while promoting health, well being and relaxation. It is what every city-bred Indian needs to promote his well-being and to aid in mental and physical recovery to ensure that his batteries are recharged for the workplace week after week, month after month, year after year!

In my next articles I will try and feature the phenomenon of Home Service Massage Services in Mumbai that have proliferated in recent times and also recount funny stories and often moving anecdotes of my experiences with the scores of clients and customers who have availed of my home massage service over the years in this humongous city called Bombay / Mumbai.

    About the Author

Babloo Singh runs a home service Massage service for Men in Mumbai and has been doing so consistently over the last ten years. He has a band of masseurs who efficiently use Mumbai's efficient public transport system to commute from one end of the city to another to massage the tired bodies of hundreds of customers every day. Himself starting of as one of the many illiterate migrants from Uttar Pradesh who land up in Mumbai hoping to eke out a living, Babloo was initiated into the Massage routine by his maalishwala Uncle - who was one of the breed of many 'Outdoor Maalishwalas' who roam the crowded beaches of Mumbai and offer their services to revelers for a pittance. Initially starting off as a Beach Maalishwala, Babloo has managed to upgrade his skills to Include Swedish Massage, Thai Massage, Deep Tissue, Accupressure and also devised his own pain-relieving Massage Therapies over the years. He still charges a paltry amount compared to the many thousands of rupees that the modern spas that have proliferated over the city now charge - because importantly for him he looks upon Massage as a seva - a humanitarian service to people in this city. He can be contacted on 9769968705 for a quick appointment followed by a visit and a rewarding session with this hardy entrepreneur with a heart!
