With a 2007 population of 523,000, Hannover is a major center of northern Germany. Although it features a charming old town, the city is quite modern and is known for hosting many annual expositions, such as the Hannover fair. In 2000, Hannover was host to the Expo 2000 Worlds Fair. The fairground is the largest in the world, and also hosts the Oktoberfest Hanover, which is second only to Munich.
Hannover has many wonderful gardens and parks, and is famous for the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen, which is a Baroque masterpiece created in the 17th century to mimic the gardens at Versailles. The superb Botanical Garden is worth a visit and features pavilions with free-flying butterflies and birds. Another exceptional point of interest is the Hanover zoo, which is known as one of Europe's best, and has received numerous awards.
The old town is another splendid point of interest that features many picturesque streets and buildings. The Market Church and the old town hall are two of the most interesting structures in the old town, along with the Leibnitz House, the Beguine Tower and the Nolte House. Worth noting is the fact that many ancient buildings that you will find in the old town have been salvaged and rebuilt pursuant to the bombing in World War II.
Hannover features 23 museums as well as a thriving gallery and theater scene, not to mention a very lively music scene covering the whole spectrum of genres. Don't forget to visit the European Cheese Center, which located in the district of Anderten boasts being the only cheese experience centre in Europe. For a walking tour of the 36 most important sites of the city center, start at the tourist information office and walked the 3 mile long red line that is painted on the pavement.
