Surf Kayaks - Another Way to Catch Waves

Kayaking is a great way to enjoy the ocean. For some an added benefit of kayaking in the ocean is being able to catch waves. Most kayaks can be surfed to some degree, but there are some styles better suited for surfing. Here are the most common surfing kayaks out there.

- Touring kayaks can be surfed in modest waves. These are good for cruising the coast and learning to ride waves with a kayak. If your using one in an area with regular swells it should have a flatter bottom, blunter bow, and a sturdy rudder.

- Recreational kayaks are good for fun surf and light touring. Models that are shorter than 11ft with flatter hulls and upswept bows will perform better on waves. Longer versions travel faster but are usually only used in small surf.

- Wave Witches use a fin like rudder on a hydroplaning hull, sometimes with side fins. The longer versions are more like a touring kayaks while the shortest ones are built for waves.

-Wave Skis are the most high performance surfing kayaks. They are essentially surfboards you paddle with a kayak paddle. Most have surfboards style fins, a quick release seat belt, and foot straps. These kayaks are very short, from 6-9ft. They take the most practice to use well and are best suited for wave riding.

- Hybrid Wave Skis are fairly short with an open hull. These do not have as high a surfing performance as the wave ski but come fairly close.

Choosing the right surfing kayak requires that you consider the type of wave that you will be surfing as well as how much open water cruising you want to do. It is probably best to try to rent different types before making a plunge on a purchase.

Lost Ski Areas of Southern Vermont

Lost Ski Areas of Southern Vermont

$17.39

Hidden amongst the hills and mountains of southern Vermont are the remnants of sixty former ski areas, their slopes returning to forest and their lifts decaying. Today, only fourteen remain open and active in southern Vermont. Though they offer some incredible skiing, most lack the intimate, local feel of these lost ski trails. Jeremy Davis, creator of the New England Lost Ski Areas Project, looks into the over-investment, local competition, weather variation, changing skier habits, insurance costs and just plain bad luck that caused these ski areas to succumb and melt back into the landscape. From the family-operated Hogback in Windham County to Clinton Gilbert's farm in Woodstock, where the very first rope tow began operation in the winter of 1934, these once popular ski areas left an indelible trace on the hearts of their ski communities and the history of southern Vermont.

Until 1979 a lot of new ski resorts were developed. At the beginning of the 80s the politicians intervened in the wild extension in the Alps and organized the development of this natural space. The rapid expansion was finished.1 In the 80s and 90s, the enterprises began to integrate further parts of the value chain. Pure lift operators became big ski resort companies. From the beginning of the 90s the growth of winter sportsmen stagnated.2 In total there are about 32 million skiers in Europe.3 Nowadays it is nearly impossible to open new resorts. Consequently the ski resort companies are more asked to improve their services, make up combinations with other resorts, built up co- operations or downsize the companies to compete with other ski resorts in the mountains. This market is really hard battled and the suppliers try to find their niches like family-, pure sport- or snowboard resorts. They started to concentrate on their core competencies at the end of the 90s and invested huge amounts of money to upgrade the important transport possibilities like chair lifts or gondolas in the whole resorts. Most of the smaller and middle sized ski resorts work with deficit.4 This made it extremely important in the 90s for businesses to introduce new divisions in the organizational structure to control and support the management.5 Nowadays only about 50 percent of the ski resorts know Controlling as a division of the management; therefore they often invest money without knowing the affects of it.6 The increasing importance of Cont

Can I mount a trolling motor on the back of my 18ft pleasure boat?

I have a 84 Reinell V6 18ft open bow boat I use for ski and fishing, I want to get a cheapie trolling motor from walmart and mount it on the platform on the back of the boat where you stand, just a little something to guide the boat and keep me away from the rocks while fishing... has anyone ever seen it done.. any help would be great.. im trying to do this the cheapest way.. Im pretty good at fabricating stuff so any ideas would be appreciated.

No reason why not - won't give a lot of thrust but might work just fine for what you are doing. You can get troll mounts that are for horizontal surfaces such as bow mounted units - see what comes with the motor you are looking at. To limit the distance down into the water the motor slides a piece of PVC tube can be cut and clipped in. Some motors have a screw clamp to limit the height so it shouldn't be much of an issue.

Any holes in Fibreglass should be oversized and plugged with thickened epoxy, then re-drilled to correct size. No water can be allowed access to any glass fibre. A blob of sealant won't be good enough, bedding compound should be used for all fittings fastened to the hull or deck.

Good luck.
