According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in four Americans is now obese. And as obesity rises, more and more people are dieting.

A joint study by SELF magazine and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that:

  • 67% of women surveyed are trying to lose weight
  • 37% regularly skip meals to lose weight
  • 27% would be extremely upset if they gained 5 pounds
  • And 53% of dieters are already at a healthy weight and are still trying to lose weight

The 37% who regularly skip meals is what really worries me. Because - contrary to common sense - skipping meals is the WORST way to lose weight. What's even worse is that many of these women's try to completely eliminate junk food from their diet in their quest for more weight loss.

The ironic thing is that you actually can lose weight by eating MORE junk food. You just have to do it strategically. In fact, there are 5 reasons I can think of why junk food can help you get skinny. Here they are:

Reason #1: Helps you beat back fat cravings - Have you ever had an irresistible urge for donuts, ice cream or cake? Well, did you know there is a part of the brain that craves fatty foods? And that if you cut fat out of your diet this part of the brain takes control of your food choices?

It's true. Your body needs a certain amount of fat to survive. And if you drastically restrict your fat intake, you'll eventually binge on food that will make you fat.

To turn this switch off, you must eat fatty foods at a specific time each day or week.

Reason #2: Suppresses your sweet tooth - Sugar has been linked to the same brain chemicals that cause addiction in drug users. There's not a single health expert who doesn't believe you shouldn't try to eliminate sugar from your diet. Even the US government recommends no more than 8 teaspoons a day (about two sodas worth).

However, I disagree. Sugar is a rapid release energy source. And when your body needs massive amounts of energy...it craves sugar. And much like the fat cravings in reason #2, if you fight these cravings it is very likely you will binge on even MORE sugar.

That's why you have to strategically suppress your sweet tooth with regularly eating junk food.

Reason #3: Motivates you to make good food choices - Eating junk food motivates you to eat healthier? That doesn't sound like it makes sense. Well it does. Here's why.

If you choose to eat junk food (not give in to temptation...but actually decide when you eat junk), you take back control of when and where you eat. This is powerful. Simply knowing you control your food choices will help you pick healthy food over the long run and lose weight.

Reason #4: Curbs constant unhealthy snacking - Constant snacking stems from a feeling of constantly being hungry. This "feeling" causes you to grab anything and everything in sight, rather than sticking to foods that promote weight loss. If you learn how to fulfill your hunger with strategic junk food eating, you can stem constant unhealthy snacking.

Reason #5: Boosts your metabolism, so you have more energy - Are you too tired to exercise? If you have cut back the calories drastically, you may be killing how much energy you get during the day.

You see, your body automatically goes into fat storing mode when you cut back calories too far. That means instead of using the food you eat for energy...you pack on the pounds. The bad news here is that this destroys any motivation to exercise, something that will help you lose weight in the long run.
