From its inception in 1984 to 2006 the Breeders Cup was a single-day event, expanding to two days in 2007. Traditionally, it has been held at different racecourses every year, to maximise its exposure to the US public. However, the 2009 meeting will again be held at Santa Anita, on November 6th and 7th. Its 14 races, with 5 on the Friday and 9 on the Saturday, are worth a total of $25.5 million.
Fillies and Mares Sprint
The US horses are tough to beat. However, Sweet Hearth (8/1) trained in France by Alain de Royer-Dupre is quietly fancied. Her shrewd handler believes that race and surface will suit.
Juvenile Fillies Turf
A winner of her only start, beating Smart Seattle (7/2) by a nose, House Of Grace (3/1) seems sure to improve for her debut. Dad`s Crazy (6/1) won impressively over a mile at Belmont.
Juvenile Fillies
A race that has yet to be won by any non-US trainer. Blind Luck (7/2), impressive winner of the Oak Leaf Stakes, is favoured to reverse the form with Mi Sueno (5/1) who beat her in the Debutante Stakes.
Fillies and Mares Turf
2008 winner Forever Together (7/2) won a Grade 1 at Saratoga. Dar Re Mi (9/2), winner of the Pretty Polly Stakes and Yorkshire Oaks prior to a creditable 5th in the Arc, looks a potential British winner.
Ladies Classic
Won in 2008 by the unbeaten filly, Zenyatta (5/4). John Shirrefs is undecided on the race to contest, but at present she is hot favourite to win this. Godolphin`s Music Note (7/2) is a five-time Grade 1 winner, with a leading chance.
Marathon
St. Leger winner Mastery (5/2) is now market leader for this intriguing Marathon. He holds Father Time (5/1) on St. Leger form and looks the best bet of the meeting.
Turf Sprint
Although never winning above Grade 2, California Flag (4/1) seems likely to start favourite after 6 wins. A winner on dirt and turf, anything that beats him must nearly win. Fleeting Spirit (5/1) has a live chance.
Dirt Mile
A dirt race likely to be contested by the home contingent, as the Europeans are reluctant to oppose on the surface. However, Aidan O`Brien may field Mastercraftsman (11/4) who would have a favourite`s chance if handling the surface. Crown Of Thorns (10/1) is a very lightly raced 4-y-o Grade 1 winner who merits respect.
Mile
2008 winner Goldikova (Evens) will be looking to emulate Miesque, who won this race in 1987-88. Following a shock defeat on Arc day connections hope that their flying filly can return to her best. Aidan O`Brien seems to favour this race for Mastercraftsman (4/1), with Godolphin represented by Two Thousand Guineas 2nd, Delegator (7/1).
Juvenile
Over 9f on dirt, this race provides a test of speed and stamina. Bob Baffert`s Lookin` At Lucky (2/1) unbeaten in three starts, is short-priced favourite and likely winner.
Juvenile Turf
Todd Pletcher`s Interactif (6/4) a winner of his last two Grade 3 starts is a short-priced favourite, but 4/1 Dewhurst winner Beethoven looks generous. Improving, he looks the value.
Sprint
Bob Baffert`s unbeaten Zensational (6/4) has three Grade 1 wins from as many starts and is highly regarded by connections. Fleeting Spirit (12/1) would be excellent each-way value if running.
Turf
Sir Michael Stoute`s 2008 Turf winner, Conduit (6/4) is a worthy short-priced favourite as winner of Ascot`s King George & Queen Elizabeth Stakes and 4th in the Arc. Harry Hartman`s Presious Passion (10/1) a winner of two Grade 1 races looks good each-way value if participating.
Classic
With the retirement of Sea The Stars, the Classic is an open affair, with Rip Van Winkle favourite at 15/8. Zenyatta (11/2) is a leading fancy, but despite being unbeaten in 13 starts has never beaten the colts. Henry Cecil`s Twice Over booked his ticket with an impressive success in Newmarket`s Champion Stakes and looks great each-way value at 12/1.
