Landrover Freelander 1 – Defining A New Product Category
Sports Utility Vehicles have evolved over the years to cater to a growing market frivolity that goes beyond what the vehicle was meant to do as its category name suggests. It’s no longer as utilitarian as what a utility vehicle is, and apart from a few compact agile models, the idea of sportiness goes out the window.
You have an SUV that is more a luxury vehicle that you don’t ever want to get muddied or dented across some off-road wilderness. Of course, most are capable of navigating though shallow waters and their 4x4 gearboxes enable them to drive through mud and uneven surfaces and roomy enough and ruggedly built to accommodate heavy payloads.
That’s often reserved to the more reserved to the sturdier and older Land Rover Series vehicles. Speaking of the Land Rover, you now get a new generation of SUVs sharing the same luxury features of mainstream SUVs you won’t find in the original Land Rovers of the 50s, 60s and 70s. One of the later models, its Landrover Freelander, looks as handsome and is a luxurious as any SUVs in its class that came out during its production years between 1996 and 2006.
A Brief History
In the late 80s, the Land Rover just had to keep up with growing competition in the vehicle category few would dispute as having been created by the Land Rover name. The Willys Jeep that inspired it came out with the trend-setting Cherokee which many consider as the first true SUV – a fusion of a utilitarian Station Wagon but with the agility of a four-wheel drive in a more manageable size that is starting to attract a growing number of families to drop their penchant for the traditional sedan. Against the Japanese, it had to compete with the popular Toyota Land Cruiser as well.
In the meantime, a market survey the Rover Group did in the late 80s showed promising potential for a compact off-roader with a sportier manageability and styling. But it didn’t have much R&D and looked to its then partner Honda to finance the Freelander project codenamed CB40 after the Canley Building 40 where the project gestated.
Honda declined as it was working on its own CR-V project. BMW wasn’t much help either despite having bought the Rover Group in 2000. Rover finally went on its own using existing parts to come up with the compact 3-door Freelander in 1997. It was an instant hit and became Europe’s best-selling 4-wheel drive until 2002. The Honda CR-V was launched in the same year.
Winning Features
The first generation Landrover Freelander 1 used 1.8 to 2-liter diesel engines while the latter models had the larger 2.5 liter six-cylinder petrol engines. You had a choice of Manual Transmission which dominated the early models, and automatic with very popular tiptronic gearbox design.
While showing off its superb handling in various endurance races like the Camel Trophy and G4 Challenge, the first generation Freelanders lacked much of the capabilities of its full-sized Land Rover siblings like a low speed gear selection and a locking differential that gave it a relatively poorer off-road performance though it exhibited better handling on wet grass and ice over its competitors in the same class.
The early K-series also had problems with head-gasket failures due to low quality alloys. It was, however, the first Land Rover specimen to feature hill descent control which, together with traction control and its Automatic Braking System, gave the Landrover Freelander 1 excellent driving in off-road conditions.
