The head was redesigned in 1981 to produce more swirl in the intake mixture, thus High Efficiency. Compression ratio was increased to 10:1. Fuel savings was more than 50% over the original low compression motor. Imagine how much fuel it used before the redesign. All 1987 XJS's would have had HE heads.
