If you are staying in Orlando, Florida near the main tourist attractions you may enjoy a few hours away from the parks, shopping and the main hustle and bustle to enjoy a leisurely stroll along quiet nature trails.
During our last visit we visited the Tibet-Butler nature reserve: 8777 State Road 535, Shore Of Lake Tibet-Butler, Orlando, FL 32836. Entrance is Free and virtually a stone's throw from the main theme parks this 440 acre country park let's you experience 'natural' Florida.
On arrival we stopped at the visitors' centre before taking one of the many hiking trails. The centre has a range of exhibits that will appeal to children and adults alike. There are a range of interesting 'nature' leaflets, including 'living with alligators' and a trail map. Children, especially will enjoy the interactive displays - press the frog-calling buttons to listen to the different calls and be prepared for the rather authentic thunder & lightning display! Check the schedule of programs and naturalist-led hikes.
Once we had collected our trail map, we stopped at the drinks machine - we would recommend taking drinks, bug repellant, plenty of sun screen and even snacks so that you can enjoy the trails in comfort. Rest rooms are situated behind the visitors' centre.
We took the trail that lead to Osprey view. The trail consisted of sand-trails and elevated boardwalks - we were fortunate to see an armadillo from the boardwalk searching for his food in the undergrowth. At Osprey view there is seating where you can enjoy looking over the small pond to the large lake beyond. We saw some lovely birds including Egrets and Eagles. Children, would I am sure enjoy a couple of hours freely walking along the nature trails and boardwalks.
On return to the visitor centre we enjoyed a relaxing moment sitting in the rocking chairs on the veranda. We then explored the wildlife circle walk next to the visitors' centre. There was what looked like a little Dormouse peaking at us from his little burrow, lots of tiny birds and a tortoise.
There are picnic benches by the steps to the visitor centre where you could enjoy a leisurely break.
Directions: Take Exit 68 (Lake Buena Vista) off of I-4 West. Head north about 5 miles on C.R. 535 (Winter Garden-Vineland Road). Entrance to the preserve is on the east (right) side of the road.
Following our visit, within about 10/15 minutes we were enjoying a leisurely stroll around Downtown Disney before dining.
