The Scientists have been at it again!
This time they've stumbled across the answer to just how seriously alcohol affects your sperm count, even though they were getting rats drunk to see what effect it has on any offspring created.
It used to be thought that a mans sperm could not be affected by anything but now we know that paternal exposure to some pesticides and other chemicals can slash a couple's chances of pregnancy.
This particular experiment at Washington University was intended to discover if a fathers drinking habits could lead to a child with fetal alcohol syndrome in the same way a mothers can.
Obviously any experiment that encouraged actual humans to drink heavily to see the effects on their offspring would be rather unethical so out come some trusty lab rats for a human style binge
75 of the little blighters were injected with alcohol to bring the concentration of alcohol in their blood upto 0.2%, twice the drink driving limit... Sure enough the rats passed out or "seemed groggy". After 24 hours the rats were introduced to 75 female rats that had never touched a drop and despite their sobriety they all apparently agreed to copulate. Unsuprisingly the males interest in sex hadn't dropped and they got busy with the same vigour as 75 tea total males that had also been introduced to 75 females. (Why isn't it this easy for humans?)
The initial intention was just to keep an eye on the rat pups born to the drunken fathers to see if any learning difficulties were evident - the boffins never believed for a minute they would see a lowering of fertility after just one dose of alcohol
When a sharp decline in the pregnancy rate of the female rats that had been paired up with the alcohol treated males was noticed, the scientists thought they must have made a mistake... but after repeating the experiment and coming up with the same results the team found that the rate of pregnancy declined by a staggering 50% for rodent couples including a drunken male!
Perhaps just as alarmingly the researchers found that baby rats seared by tipsy fathers appeared smaller and of lower weight than the control pups!
What could have caused this?
No definitive answer but the Boffins suspect that the alcohol may transfer to the seminal fluid creating a poisonous environment for a newly inseminated embryo... Another (seemingly obvious to me) possibility is that the alcohol could damage the sperm, slowing its motility - the actual action of wriggling its way to the egg! To me this says that if a guy gets drunk - his sperm also gets drunk! Seems pretty logical when you think about it, eh?
Either way this makes pretty alarming reading for any couples trying for a baby out there and can be summed up quite simply thus:
If you have a male fertility issue, be it with low sperm count or low sperm motility - CUT OUT THE BOOZE.
