Can you really afford good deals like âdonât pay until...â?
The holiday season is around the corner. I have already heard so many “good deals†commercials flying on the air like “don’t pay until...â€, or “0%finance availableâ€, etc.  Are these really good deals? Before you get too excited and put your name down on the paper, be aware of the hidden cost. Common sense says that someone has to pay for the cost of borrowing. Here are some questions that you want to ask before making the decision.
Good Deal Question 1: Is there any administration fee or other cost to setup the account?
Quite often, the retailers claim that they don’t charge you interest on the amount of purchasing within certain period of time, but you will have to pay onetime fee, either called setup fee or administration fee. Let’s see if the purchase worth $2,000 and you don’t have to pay interest within 2 years, however, you will have to pay $100 to set the account up, which equivalents to 5% upfront. It is relatively low comparing with credit cards, but it is not 0% for sure.
Good Deal Question 2: How much is the interest rate if you can’t pay off the balance in time?
The payment schedule can be different from retailer to retailer. Some of them allow you have flexibility. As long as you pay off the whole balance within certain period of time, say 24 months or 36 months, and no monthly payment account is required; while some retailer do require minimum monthly payment. Do ask about the payment schedule and the punishment term if you can’t make payment in time. Most retailers will charge ultra high interest rate. Don’t be surprised if you suddenly find out that you are charged more than 20% interest just because you missed one payment. After all, it will be two or three year’s commitment. Anything could happen.
Good Deal Question 3: Can you really afford the good deal?
Before jumping on the deals, some personal budgeting is highly recommended. Let’s say that you are going to buy a big screen TV at $2,400, and don’t have to pay for 24 months. It means you will have to commit to pay off $2,712 (Oh yes, never forget about TAX) in two years. If we average it out, you will have to allocate extra $113 every month on top of all your other monthly expense, for two years, without any potential financial change. Do you really want to go through the stress and carry the burden of future?
The best way is to reverse the order, save up money first and purchase with cash. Then you will really enjoy what you buy with no strings attached.Â
