Overall pontoon boats offer a different type of relaxation on the lake. Slower than a Ski Boat, but much bigger, they allow you to relax while you cruise the water or watch a sunset. I am wanting to use these to travel and fish through out a large reservoir that is pretty basic and doesn't have anything like trees or rocks sticking out and also to navigate and fish on a large lake. So ...

I saw your question before and considered answering, but I figured someone would come along with some advice very specific to these two pieces of equipment. I guess that didn't happen.

What I can tell you is that you seem to be comparing apples to oranges. I think your real question is whether you should get a float tube (any float tube) or a pontoon (any).

Fishing with these two pieces of gear will be different. They have different uses. You shouldn't be telling us your physical proportions, you should be telling us your intentions -- where you fish, how you fish, what you like to do. Some specifics would help a lot.

A pontoon can be used for getting from one area to another and floating around for fun as much as for fishing. You can actually cover a lot of distance in a pontoon, and they are designed to be easy-on, easy-off. You don't necessarily have to fish from them. You can equip them with a small trolling motor and you can carry provisions and although they were originally designed with fly anglers in mind, it's sometimes fun to hop on your pontoon and just float the lake and recon places where you might want to wade. A pontoon is probably going to be more comfortable over long days of fishing, too. What I'm saying is it that it is somewhat more versatile and you will likely use it for more than just a fishing platform.

The float tube is a different tool. It's mainly a fishing platform and as such it has advantages, too. While it's not going to be that great for moving quickly over longer distances, I think the close-in maneuverability of a float tube is probably better than the pontoon. It basically turns you into a floating angler, not an angler on a small boat. If you're looking to move in from the waterside to some tight corners or among weeds and structure, the float tube will serve you better than a pontoon. On the other hand, I wouldn't want to fish for more than about four hours from a float tube -- not without a break.

SO... if you want an all around fishing platform that can get you out into the middle of the lake or across a broad stream, and if you want something that is also fun to tool around on, I'd go for the pontoon. If you're simply looking to extend your wading range and fish in and around areas that are inaccessible by wading alone, then go for the tube.

Personally, if I did not have either gear, I'd want both. If I could only get one to begin with, I'd get the pontoon first.

EDIT: Thanks for the extra details. For a big reservoir that you want to explore and fish thoroughly, I'd go for the pontoon. Moving across a large reservoir in a float tube can be done, but you're basically swimming. It's more tedious and time consuming, and you are more at the mercy of wave action (from boats and weather). My first experience with a pontoon was dramatic -- they move MUCH faster than I expected and with less fatigue than, say, a canoe. On the pontoon, you can row, fish from the seat, or you can quickly hop off and wade. In that float tube, even though it's the bucket-seat kind, you still have to "emerge" from the tube in order to wade. Also, the pontoon is more conducive to a longer excursion -- you can carry provisions and even a small amount of camp gear. It's as much a watercraft as it is a fishing platform.

I will add this, and I hope it doesn't muddy the waters for you. I find fishing/casting from a float tube is easier for some reason. Something about being down in the water and being able to turn and spin easily is better for me than casting from the seat of a pontoon. It's not a huge difference, but it is a consideration. A pontoon can drift all over creation if you don't know what you're doing, whereas in a float tube you can often stay put and direct yourself while still casting, almost without a second thought.

One more thing I thought of -- pontoons are very popular right now. If you find yourself going fly fishing on a lake with some friends, they are more likely to have canoes or pontoons than float tubes. Seems like the height of float tube popularity is behind us, so a pontoon would be more "compatible" with the tastes and preferences of anglers nowadays. It would suck to have to try to keep up with three or four people on pontoons while you're in a tube.

So, my preference would still be a pontoon, but only because of its versatility. I find casting and the actual act of fishing a bit more "natural" in the tube, but that's a minor factor. In the long term, if you're fishing lots of flatwater, there's nothing wrong with having both.
