Recently, American car makers announced that they have had problems with leasing and will either eliminate or cut back on lease financing options. What does this mean to automotive consumers?
American car companies have relied heavily on large SUVs and trucks, and have heavily promoted leasing by offering artificially inflated lease-end residual values to keep payments attractively low. As gas prices have risen, the actual resale values or residual values of these vehicles have take a quick nose dive. This means, when leasing customers return vehicles at the end of leases, the companies take a big financial loss when the vehicles are sold at auction.
The car manufacturers losses on leasing have been consumers gains. Those who leased SUVs and and trucks may have had to pay higher gas prices, but they didn't take the huge financial loss that they would have taken if they had purchased those vehicles. Therefore leasing has been a problem to car makers, but a benefit to automotive consumers.
As a result, consumers of American automobiles can expect to see higher lease rates for large vehicles. Foreign car makers are not as affected because of their larger focus on smaller fuel efficient vehicles. Unfortunately, the reaction of American car makers to their lease problems will only create additional defection to non-US brands who will continue to offer attractive leases.
Leasing will continue to be a good alternative to buying for those who are looking for low monthly payments. Even as American car makers offer 0% loans and rebates, lease payments for the same vehicle, same terms, will still be lower -- even if lease rates increase. Only by offering long-term upside down loans of 72 and 84 months will hope to compete with leasing. To consumers, long-term loans are not smart and it's a shame that American car manufacturers are trying to convince customers otherwise.
