We live in a society where graduation ceremonies start as early as preschool, where rites of passage are celebrated like clockwork every few years. A person could easily take part in half a dozen graduation ceremonies for themselves over a lifetime, and it's almost a wonder when the final graduation occurs.
In years past, someone would take part in a graduation ceremony for high school, maybe college, perhaps law or medical school in rare cases. Now, preschool graduation becomes kindergarten graduation which becomes sixth grade graduation which leads in time to middle school graduation. This says nothing of athletic or scouting or other club graduations in the interim. By high school graduation, any self-respecting parent should be a hardened veteran. The sounds of "Pomp and Circumstance" should conjur feelings of deja vu or even mild annoyance.
This isn't to say each new ceremony is not an occasion for celebration. On the contrary, your son or daughter's graduation from anything represents an accomplishment, and as interminable as the litany of ceremonies may seem, it is finite. So the best way to deal with graduations is to enjoy them while they last.
Throwing a graduation party is fine, even advisable. Decorations for graduation can be as simple as some streamers and a sign congratulating the graduate. The decorations need not be opulent, just heartfelt. After all, graduation decorations are less important than the people they celebrate.
Each graduation is also, to a certain extent, a new experience both for graduates and their friends and loved ones. Ceremonies for young children are usually held in their classrooms, nothing too fancy, with "Pomp and Circumstance" sometimes played on kazoos. By sixth grade and middle school, an auditorium is generally needed, at least. High schools and colleges sometimes require local arenas or stadiums to accommodate all the graduates and attending families.
Appropriate graduation gifts vary depending on the age of the graduate. For a preschool or kindergarten graduation, an ice cream cone or a trip to a favorite kid-themed restaurant is fine. For a middle school graduation, a CD or DVD is likely sufficient, maybe a gift certificate. High school is when it starts to get more pricey: Graduates sometimes receive hundreds of dollars in cash or trips to exotic locales. If your kid makes it as far as a med school graduation, prepare to shell out for a car, though take solace in this: Soon your son or daughter will be able to afford to buy one for you.
