It is estimated that recreational and commercial boating has nearly tripled over the last decade, with over 14 million boats and Personal Watercraft currently registered in the United States today. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, there are currently over 8,600 boat crashes each year, and these accidents leave over 900 people dead and almost 4,500 seriously injured.

Typically, powerboats such as speed boats, cabin cruisers and jet skis are the most common types of watercraft to be involved in boating accidents, although sailboats can also be involved in accidents. The most frequent sources of injuries seem to be caused by propeller accidents and collisions. Also, because Personal Watercraft such as jet skis can’t be steered when the throttle is released, inexperienced drivers often have collisions when confronted with an emergency situation.

What are the typical ownership costs involved with a 25-30' express (cabin) cruiser?

I already have docking and storage fees but I would like to know how much about any hidden or required costs such as repairs/rebuilds and such. I will be taking the boat out with the family for possibly 2-4 hours per week. I want to know whether or not this is affordable to me before I jump into it.

I had a 32 footer in Youngston, NY just across the way from you for years. The first thing I noticed about what you said was that you would use it 2-4 hours a week. Personally, considering the way too short of a boating season you have... I don't know how in the world you will get your money's worth - just using it that little bit of time.
So, if I can't convince you to devote your boating season weekends to boating... Then you will be paying an awful lot for something you plan to use very little.
However... you are among some of the very best boating waters in the world... Not to mention Lake Ontario, the Thousand Islands, etc. but you also have the Trent-Severn, and the Rideau Waterway which have to be the best-kept cruising secrets in all of North America.
Might I suggest, you take a good close look at the site below, (especially the one on cruising Canada). Maybe this will get your "cruising" juices flowing...

As far as typical costs, aside from docking and storage, you have "haul-out" fees for taking your boat out of the water, and "haul-in" fees for putting it back in... Sure, you have some maintance fees, but for the most part, they are minimal if you take care of your boat and don't neglect it.

As for me and my family, all my 3 kids (now grown) all own boats... Mainly because they spent most of their growing up years cruising the very waters you live near... all 3 of them have taken their own boats back there again as well...

So, you need to decide on really how much you are going to use your boat... at 2 to 4 hours a week, you would be better off renting an occasional pontoon boat... Owning a boat too big to trailer, is more about a lifestyle... not just boating.
