If you don't want to drive a car with manual gears, automatic driving lessons are available at many motoring schools. There are many reasons why you may want to learn to drive in a car with automatic gears, including:
o You will not have to operate the clutch, making driving an automatic easier.
o Certain disabilities make it difficult to change gears.
o You can obtain your licence more quickly by learning in an automatic.
Driving lessons in an automatic car, however, may not prepare you for the transition to a manual vehicle. In fact, if you have an automatic licence, you will not be legally entitled to drive a manual.
Lessons from an automatic driving school may also be more expensive, as fuel costs are higher and cars with automatic gears are more costly.
Also, while many driving schools across the UK offer lessons in cars with automatic transmission, manual instructors are much more widespread. Passing your test in a manual car means you will be eligible for both manual and automatic driving.
Schools that teach in automatic cars are less common, but if you think you would benefit from driving lessons, they can still be found in most towns and cities.
However, as there are many more manual vehicles on the road, learning in an automatic may mean you get less time on the road - as you may not be able to practise with friends or relatives between lessons.
Still, learning at an automatic driving school can help younger drivers build their confidence behind the wheel, as a car with automatic gears is easier to control than a manual.
